At its core, the card linking as its name suggests is the ability to link several cards together.
Usually, different teams work on different tasks on different boards with a different priority, deadlines, descriptions and so on, but they still need a way to synchronize on the whole. This is where you use links. We typically use links when we have master tasks (features, epic stories, small projects, etc) and a lot of smaller child tasks. If all smaller tasks could be small enough, and if they could live on the same board, they would be sub-tasks, but this is not always the case.
We use different types of links to relate tasks to one another. In summary:
- Relative links: Users make use of links to group together cards and to create a network of cards in the system. The related cards do not show any sort of hierarchy.
- Parent/Child links: Users make use of links to break down master tasks (features, epic stories, small projects, etc) into a lot of smaller child tasks and thus create a hierarchy between the tasks.
Note: If all smaller tasks could be small enough, and if they could live on the same board, they would be sub-tasks, but this is not always the case.
- Successor/Predecessor links: Users make use of links to create a rule of order in the breakdown of their work. The cards become dependent on each other with an indication of the order in which they will need to be performed.
2. How to link cards?
This article aims to show how to:
- Link a card to existing cards in the system in order to create a relation between the items.
- Break down a card into smaller work items. Using this approach you can instantly create new cards via the existing card (source card).
There are several ways to establish links between the cards:
Link existing cards by drag & drop them directly on the board (gif.1).
Press the CRTL key and Drag & Drop the selected card on the top of the card you wish to link it to -> select one of the link types from the drop-down menu to define their relation: parent/child/relative/predecessor/successor. The cards will be automatically linked to each other.
When you link the cards, each of them gets updated with a link that redirects users to the respective card in the relation.
-> on hover the link displays summarized information for the related card.
-> double click the link to open the related card.
Use the Card Context menu to:
- create a new linked card (1)
- link existing cards (2)
To create a new linked card (1), open the context menu from the upper right corner of your card → select Link/Copy to open a panel with the links types. Choose the type of relationship and the system will prompt you to select a location (board/column) via the Board minimap, where the new card is to be created. When you define the position, you have to enter the card details (for example: Title, Assignee, deadline), then click the Add button to trigger the card creation.
The new card will be automatically linked to the source card from which you initiated the linking process.
To link the original card to an existing card (2) , please use the same navigation to open the Context menu and select the last options available in the Links panel: i.e. Link to existing card.
Enter a Card ID or a Title to refer to a card and link them.
Open the card and use the Links Overview menu to link existing cards.
Use the plus icon (+) to make the current card a Child; Parent; Relative; Predecessor or Successor. Just select the type of connection and enter a card ID or a Title to refer to an existing card in the system and link them via the Create a link button.
Double click to open a card and select the LINKS tab.
Users will be able to see all cards that are linked to the original card in the following perspectives:
- Table view
- Bar Chart View
- Pie Chart View
- Board View
Note: the "Board view" option provides extra functionality. Right-click on any of the cards in the Kanban Board preview to open the Links tab that supports all linking capabilities.
Moreover, you can select "Create New Link" to open a menu and link new or existing cards.
If you create a new card - select the type of relation and use the mini Boardmap to define the position of the new card you are going to create. You can select the board and the column/lane.
The last choice in the Links panel allows you to link the card to an existing card in the system. If you use this approach, you have to select the type of link from the supporting panel that comes up -> just clicking the respective button. Then enter a card ID or a Title to refer to an existing card in the system and link the items via the Create a link button.
The Links tab displays all linked cards in a list of table format.
Use the "Configure Results" button to display any card-related information that you want to make visible. For example, when you click the Configure Results button, you can easily display further card details such as: description, tad, size, etc -> just select the pills from the configuration panel and Apply your changes.
Use the Related Board feature to link cards.
Go to the sidebar located to the right of each board interface and open the Related boards' panel (1). Drag and drop the card onto the related board, where the linked card is to be created (2).
After you drop the card, the link menu appears.

3. How to copy and sync properties when linking cards.
The Copy/Sync link details capability allows you to copy and keep in sync the card properties of any two (or more) cards in the system. The Copy/Sync icon is available in every links menu and you have to select it in the link establishment process. Please check the dedicated articles to learn more about the Copy and Sync Linked Card Properties.
