Blocking a card indicates a problem (blocker) preventing the card from progressing to the right on the board because it gets immobile. Once a card is blocked, it needs immediate attention to be resolved and get unblocked.
Note: A blocked card cannot be moved to the next step in the process flow, but there is no restriction to move the card to a different swimlane in order to change its type or a priority.
1. How to block a card?
There are two ways to block a card:
A new panel opens up (Image 1) and the system prompts you to select a blocker.
You can either choose one of the predefined blockers from the dropdown menu or select the "Generic blocker" and insert a comment to describe the reason for blocking the card.
Note: You cannot use the generic blocker without adding a comment.
The comment section is optional for the rest of the blockers in the list.
Click the "Block card" button to block the card and make it immobile. It will instantly become red to stand out on the board and helps you visualize problematic areas.
This is how a blocked card with a Generic reason looks like (image 2). The reason is visible on a hover. The card must be Unblocked (resolved) to become movable again.
1.2. You can also block a card from the card settings icon (the gear icon at the top right corner of the card) -> select the "Block" icon and follow the same navigation as described above.
1.3 Use the predefined blockers in the card token panel on the Board sidebar to the right of each board interface. The predefined blockers are created by the team leader or a Workspace manager prior to the start of the project and/or based on the specific use-cases in the department.
Blocking a card is as simple as a drag and drop of the blocker to the selected card.
Important: All blocked cards accumulate block time that is added to the standard and premium analytics modules in Kanbanize.
2. How to unblock a card?
Use the same navigation to unblock а card. Open the Context menu or the card settings icon → click on "Edit/Unblock" to edit the reason or unblock the card.
3. How to edit a block reason?
Open the Context menu or the card settings icon -> click on the Block or Edit/Unblock icon
-> use the "Edit reason" icon to edit the reason -> click on the "Block card" icon to save the changes and keep the card blocked status.
4. How to customize your own blockers? (for Workspace Manager and Account Owners)
Having your own list of most commonly used blockers relevant to your unique scenario will save your time and sustain your process. In addition, it will help you to group the blockers in clusters and analyze the type of reasons that block your projects most often and turn into bottlenecks.
